Hello! Today, I’m sharing a theme that kids absolutely love, Hair Salon! It’s the perfect setting for students to dive into descriptive language while having a blast with props.
📚 Recommended Books: Hair( Leslie Patricelli) & The Hair Cut (ORT)
We explored books like Hair and The Hair Cut (ORT). These are fantastic for introducing salon-specific terminology and social phrases in context. Rather than just reading, we focused on imagining, “What if I were a hairdresser?” to get the creative juices flowing.

🎨 Today’s Activities: Our Classroom Hair Salon
We turned our learning space into a bustling salon! The session was divided into immersive roleplay and hands-on styling.
- Roleplay: Students took turns acting as “Hairdressers” and “Customers.” We practiced asking, “How do you like your hair?” and responding with styles like “braid,” “ponytail,” or “curly hair”. It was wonderful to see how much fun they had trying on different hairpieces and wigs.
- Playdough Salon: We used playdough to create hairstyles for our “customers.” It was a great way to reinforce vocabulary while practicing haircuts, brushing, and styling. We even learned the concept of being “bald” through this activity, which made the roleplay even more memorable.
- Paper Art: Coloring and cutting paper hair allowed students to practice fine motor skills while repeating vocabulary like “cut,” “brush,” and “curly”.

💡 Teacher’s Tip: The Power of “Recasting”
If your child or student is hesitant to speak or makes a grammar mistake, try “Recasting” instead of direct correction. If the student says, “I want curly,” you can reply, “Oh, you want curly hair? Great choice!” By repeating their idea in a complete, correct sentence, you validate their effort and help them learn naturally without feeling discouraged.
📝 Final Thoughts
It was such a joy to see the student so engaged in the roleplay. Seeing them confidently ask for “long rainbow-colored hair” or diligently give their clay customers a haircut shows just how much play bridges the gap to language acquisition. I highly recommend trying this “Hair Salon” theme at home—it’s a guaranteed hit! 🙂
